1926

Allen Hollis, a civic leader, donates $5,000 to the school district along with 12 acres of land (off Fruit Street) toward creation of an athletic complex. Work begins on what would soon become Memorial Field.

1927

&endash; Class of '27 comes out with first school yearbook &endash; the SYB (Senior Year Book). The new high school opens on North Fruit Street. Over 2,000 people attend the dedication ceremonies. The new building has 23 classrooms, a music room, library, cafeteria, auditorium, and gymnasium that seats 250.

1928

High School purchases a "moving picture machine" and a screen for the auditorium."The district can now take advantage of the latest development in visual education."

1930

Due to the Depression, all sports at CHS except for football are dropped.

1932

Former CHS student Douglas Everett leads the U.S. to a Silver Medal in Hockey in the Lake Placid Winter Olympics. The local hockey area would later bear his name.

1935

The football team beats the Alumni 6-0 in the last-ever Thanksgiving Day game.

1936

Principal Charles F. Cook retires after a "generation of service" (30 years). The 12-grade system is reinstated.

1938

The '38 Hurricane shuts the school down for two weeks. Students use this time to work around town helping to repair the excessive wind and flood damage.

1939

The Concord High Band attends the New York World's Fair.

1940

Rotary and Kiwanis Club sponsor a fundraising drive which wipes out an athletic debt of $700 that had accumulated over a period of years.

1941

&endash; Collapsible bleachers installed in the gymnasium to expand seating at basketball games.

1942

War dominates the high school scene. Students lead scrap drives and rally to buy $12,000 in War Bonds to support the effort. The CHS Band meets Hollywood actress Dorothy Lamour at the train station when she arrives on a Bond Drive.

1943

Enrollment is affected by the draft, enlistments, transportation difficulties, and the war fever. Even the staff is affected as Superintendent (Nate Burbank), 13 teachers, and 2 janitors join the armed services. Courses in radio code, pre-flight aeronautics, and radio maintenance are added to the curriculum.

1944

High School operates on a shortened day &endash; releasing pupils for part-time work during the war emergency period.

1945

Hundreds of Concord High students and grads serve in the war …. 48 give the ultimate sacrifice.

1946

Twenty-four veterans return to CHS and graduate with the Class of '47.

1947

Course in automobile driver training is introduced on an experimental basis … nearly 50 seniors enroll.
